HP sells webOS operating system to LG Electronics

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $ 1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

LG will use the operating software, used in now-defunct Palm smartphones years ago, for its “smart” or Internet-connected TVs. The Asian electronics company had worked with HP on WebOS before offering to buy it outright.

Under the terms of their agreement, LG acquires the operating software’s source code, associated documentation, engineering talent, various associated websites, and licenses under HP’s intellectual property including patents covering fundamental operating system and user interface technology.

HP will retain the patents and all the technology relating to the cloud service of webOS, HP Chief Operating Officer Bill Veghte said in an interview.

“As we looked at it, we saw a very compelling IP that was very unique in the marketplace,” he said, adding that HP has already had a partnership with LG on webOS before the deal was announced.

“As a result of this collaboration, LG offered to acquire the webOS operating system technology,” Veghte said.

Skott Ahn, President and CTO, LG Electronics, said the company will incorporate the operating system in the Smart TV line-up first “and then hopefully all the other devices in the future.”

Both companies declined to reveal the terms of the deal.

LG will keep the WebOS team in Silicon Valley and, for now, will continue to be based out of HP offices, Ahn said.

HP opened its webOS mobile operating system to developers and companies in 2012 after trying to figure out how to recoup its investment in Palm, one of the pioneers of the smartphone industry.

The company had tried to build products based on webOS with the now-defunct TouchPad tablet its flagship product.

HP launched and discontinued the TouchPad in 2010, a little over a month after it hit store shelves with costly fanfare after it saw poor demand for a tablet priced on par with Apple’s dominant iPad.

WebOS is widely viewed as a strong mobile platform, but has been assailed for its paucity of applications, an important consideration while choosing a mobile device.

Facebook Now Has an Entire Team Devoted to Sandy Hook Scams

When three Connecticut lawmakers asked Mark Zuckerberg in a letter on Monday to do something about the flood of fake Sandy Hook memorial pages, he got back to them quickly. Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy and Rep. Elizabeth Esty, also a Democrat, pointed out that Facebook is filled countless pages that “have become vehicles for harassment, intimidation and possibly financial fraud.” The lawmakers added that such pages enable fraudsters “to violate the privacy of families as they grieve, or seek financial gain through soliciting donations under false pretenses, or generating Facebook ‘likes’ for marketing purposes, should not be given quarter in the Facebook community.” One teacher named Victoria Soto who was killed in the attack had over 100 pages dedicated to her, and the victim’s mother went to the lawmakers for help pulling them down.

Facebook called Sen. Blumenthal’s office within hours of the letter being sent to ensure him that the company had a dedicated team to deal with Sandy Hook-related requests. In a statement, the company said, “For the past few months, our rapid response team has acted swiftly to remove inappropriate materials flagged by the foundation and the families.” Indeed, it’s been nearly two months since we found out about the first Sandy Hook scammer, a New York woman who posed as the aunt of one of the first grade victims of the shootings and solicited money for a “funeral fund.” One would’ve thought that the social network would have cranked up the security dials after that scandal, but apparently it wasn’t enough. If the trouble at Facebook continues, at least we’ll know it wasn’t for lack of trying.

Facebook Inspires Hundreds to Attend a Funeral For a Man They Never Met

While Facebook might be best known as a means for some low-grade entertainment, as evidenced by our love of cat memes, it sometimes also proves to be a catalyst for an inspiring display of social good.

When 70-year-old James McConnell passed away last month in Britain’s Southsea, his nursing home staff reported that he had no known friends or family to attend his funeral. In fact, little was known about the man’s life before he came to the Bluebell Nursing Home, except that he had served in the Royal Marines.

Upon hearing the news, Rev. Bob Mason, who was charged with leading McConnell’s funeral, decided to enlist the help of Facebook; he posted a public plea, asking local residents to attend McConnell’s ceremony in order to provide the Marine Corps veteran a more dignified send-off.

According to ITV News, 200 people who had never so much as met McConnell showed up to mourn his passing.

What was supposed to have been a small, state-sponsored ceremony turned into a proper military farewell, despite the freezing temperatures; standard bearers from the Royal British Legion led a procession through the cemetery, followed by a group of flag-bearing motorcyclists. The service concluded with two buglers from the Royal Marines Band Service who played “Last Post,” the British equivalent of “Taps.”

Danny Marshall, also a former Royal Marine, was one of the attendees and he told ITV News, “It was mentioned wrongly that he did not have family. The corps family is bigger and better and than most people would know about. We are all family and always will be.”

Rev. Mason’s original post, which was shared heavily among the Facebook pages of Royal Marine Corps active and former members, included this personal appeal from the clergyman: “In this day and age it is tragic enough that anyone has to leave this world with no one to mourn their passing, but this man was family and I am sure you will agree deserves a better send off. If you can make it to the graveside for that time to pay your respects to a former brother in arms then please try to be there.”

During the ceremony, Rev. Mason said he was moved by the throng of mourners and their outpouring of kindness.

While this isn’t the first time social media has been used to galvanize a large group of people, those who attended McConnell’s funeral stand as exceptional for the simple fact that they had no personal stake in the outcome—showing up was simply the compassionate thing to do.

Here’s What We Still Don’t Know About the PlayStation 4 (Hint: A Lot)

In yesterday’s press conference, Sony introduced the PlayStation 4 console that pretty much everyone was expecting it to. The PS4 will use commodity PC hardware, will have a DualShock controller incorporating Move and a PS Vita-style touchpad, and will have built-in social and sharing features.

Also, games. Lots of them, including sequels to its Infamous and Killzone. And an upcoming streaming service that may possibly let you somehow play older PlayStation games. That’s about all we know, and most of it we’ve already heard through online rumors and leaks. Possibly the biggest surprise is that it’s going to be called the PlayStation 4, despite the cultural taboo around the number four in Japan.

Here’s what we still don’t know, and what we don’t even know when Sony will reveal:

What the PS4 looks like

The new hybrid controller was shown onstage, but there was neither hide nor hair of the PlayStation 4 itself, or any visible sign that it was the machine that was actually powering the game demos.

Whether it will be able to play used games

You already can’t loan or resell games that you buy digitally, on the PlayStation Network. But long-running rumors about Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming consoles say that they’ll somehow lock even game disc purchases to the original buyer (Microsoft recently filed a patent for a way to use the Kinect camera for this). Sony did nothing to address or dispel this rumor.

Whether Sony expects any women to buy the PlayStation 4

As Kotaku’s Patricia Hernandez points out: If it does, you wouldn’t have known it from the all-guy group of presenters that Sony brought on stage (or the sexist ads Sony ran for the PS Vita in France).

How much it will cost and what the release date will be

The PlayStation 4 is rumored to cost $ 399, but Sony’s representatives quoted no price, and gave no release date beyond saying it’d be during the holidays this year.

Whether the PS Vita will see a price drop in North America

Sony’s presentation made it clear that its handheld console, the PS Vita, can now be thought of as an accessory to its larger PlayStation consoles, a feature the PlayStation 3 has already taken partial advantage of. However, while it announced a price drop of about $ 50 in the Japanese market, Sony said nothing about its North American pricing being changed.

What a “dynamic preference-driven path through the world of content” is

This line was uttered at the press conference by “Sony big cheese” Mark Cerny, according to the liveblogging team at The Guardian. The English translation seems to be “it lets you choose what games you want to play or videos you want to watch,” and Sony big cheeses like Cerny apparently feel that the PS4 does this better than other game consoles.

Whether Sony’s customers agree — especially its female ones — remains to be seen.

Why This 7-Year-Old Is the Doogie Howser of Videogame Design

It’s not unusual for a seven-year-old girl to dream of being a ballerina, but it’s unheard of for a child so young to design a computer game about it. Nonetheless, first-grader and computer science prodigy Zora Ball did just that, making her quite possibly the youngest videogame programmer ever.

Using an open-source software program called Bootstrap, the primary school student designed a mobile game app she titled Vampire Diamonds. In it, the player takes on the role of the main protagonist, a ballerina, whose goal is to search for a jewel that’s hidden in a nail salon, while trying to avoid an evil vampire.

The game debuted at FATE’s Bootstrap Expo last year and while widely acclaimed, some were suspicious that the first-grader may have secretly received help—most likely from her older brother, Trace Ball, a STEM Scholar of the Year. To prove them wrong, the seven-year-old reportedly reconfigured her app on the spot.

Bootstrap, and its functional programming language Racket, are usually taught to kids between the ages of 12-16 as a way to use videogame development to teach algebraic concepts to students. Zora learned it in an after-school program run by the educational nonprofit known as FATE, or The Foundation for the Advancement of Technology in Education.

Kelly Ohlert, FATE’s executive director, tells TakePart, “While Zora was able to follow the directions in order to write the code for her game, everything we know about cognitive psychology indicates that a seven year-old probably can’t yet comprehend the curriculum-based algebra that is the heart of Bootstrap. That being said, she understood enough of the coding side to make simple changes to her game upon request, which is huge.”

FATE’s mission is to promote the skilled and intelligent use of education technology. Ohlert tells TakePart, “Specifically, we are targeting the problem of not having enough students trained in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to meet the needs of the next-generation workforce.

According to the Brookings Institute, the U.S. is already suffering from a lack of professionals qualified for STEM careers. Part of that lack comes from the fact that so few women are involved in science-based professions. That’s why tech companies are targeting girls and young women for more education and employment opportunities. In addition to FATE, which targets boys and girls alike, Microsoft sponsors DigiGirlzHighTech Camp, “Girls Who Code” offers free summer workshops to female high school students, and Womens’ Tech Connect mentors young computer scientists involved in the science education program through NetHope.

While Zora Ball is still too young to think of her new role as the poster child for girls in science, her recent accomplishment is another kick in the slowly opening door for girls to embrace STEM-based fields.

Exclusive: Apple, Macs hit by hackers who targeted Facebook

BOSTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Apple Inc was recently attacked by hackers who infected Macintosh computers of some employees, the company said Tuesday in an unprecedented disclosure describing the widest known cyber attacks targeting Apple computers used by corporations.

Unknown hackers infected the computers of some Apple workers when they visited a website for software developers that had been infected with malicious software. The malware had been designed to attack Mac computers.

The same software, which infected Macs by exploiting a flaw in a version of Oracle Corp’s Java software used as a plug-in on Web browsers, was used to launch attacks against Facebook, which the social network disclosed on Friday.

The malware was also employed in attacks against Mac computers used by “other companies,” Apple said, without elaborating on the scale of the assault.

Twitter, which disclosed that it had been breached February 1 and that hackers might gave accessed some information on about 250,000 users, was hit in the same campaign, according to a person close to the investigation.

Another person briefed on the case said that hundreds of companies, including defense contractors, had been infected with the same malicious software. Though this person said that the malware could have originated from China, there was no proof.

“This is a new campaign. It’s not like the other ones you read about where everyone can tell it’s China,” the first person said.

Investigations into the breaches are ongoing. It was not immediately clear when the attacks had begun, the extent to which the hackers had succeeded in stealing data from targeted systems, or whether all infected machines have been identified.

The malware was distributed at least in part through a site aimed at iPhone developers, which might still be infecting visitors who haven’t disabled Java in their browser, the person close to the case said. There is a version that infects computers running Microsoft Windows as well.

Security firm F-Secure wrote that the attackers might have been trying to get access to the code for apps on smartphones, seeking a way to infect millions of end-users. It urged developers to check their source code for unintended changes.

Apple disclosed the breach as tensions are heating up over U.S. allegations that the Chinese military engages in cyber espionage on U.S. companies.

U.S. cyber security firm Mandiant reported over the weekend that it has uncovered evidence that the Chinese military is behind a slew of cyber attacks on U.S. businesses. The White House said it has repeatedly raised concerns about Chinese cyber theft with Beijing.

The breaches described by Apple mark the highest-profile cyber attacks to date on businesses running Mac computers. Hackers have traditionally focused on attacking machines running the Windows operating system, though they have gradually turned their attention to Apple products over the past couple of years as the company gained market share over Microsoft Corp.

“This is the first really big attack on Macs,” said the source, who declined to be identified because the person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. “Apple has more on its hands than the attack on itself.”

Charlie Miller, a prominent expert on Apple security who is co-author of the Mac Hacker’s Handbook, said the attacks show that criminal hackers are investing more time studying the Mac OS X operating system so they can attack Apple computers.

For example, he noted, hackers recently figured out a fairly sophisticated way to attack Macs by exploiting a flaw in Adobe Systems Inc’s Flash software.

“The only thing that was making it safe before is that nobody bothered to attack it. That goes away if somebody bothers to attack it,” Miller said.

NATIONAL SECURITY

Cyber security attacks have been on the rise. In last week’s State of the Union address, U.S. President Barack Obama issued an executive order seeking better protection of the country’s critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday that the Obama administration has repeatedly taken up its concerns about Chinese cyber theft with Beijing, including the country’s military. There was no indication as to whether the group described by Mandiant was involved in the attacks described by Apple and Facebook.

An Apple spokesman declined to specify how many companies had been breached in the campaign targeting Macs, saying he could not elaborate further on the statement it provided.

“Apple has identified malware which infected a limited number of Mac systems through a vulnerability in the Java plug-in for browsers. The malware was employed in an attack against Apple and other companies, and was spread through a website for software developers,” the statement said.

“We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network. There is no evidence that any data left Apple,” it continued.

The statement said Apple was working closely with law enforcement to find the culprits, but the spokesman would not elaborate. The Federal Bureau of Investigation declined to comment.

Apple said it plans to release a piece of software on Tuesday that customers can use to identify and repair Macs infected with the malware used in the attacks.

Facebook says it was hacked, no data compromised

Facebook Inc. says it was the target of hackers but no user information was compromised during the attack.

The social media giant said Friday on its security blog that the company discovered in January that its system had been targeted in a sophisticated attack. A handful of the company’s employees visited a developer’s website that had been compromised, which led to malware being installed on the Facebook employee laptops.

Facebook says it has found no evidence that user data was compromised.

The company has fixed the infected machines, informed law enforcement and has an investigation of its own under way. Facebook also says it was not the only company targeted in the attacks but was one of the first to discover it.

“We are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the company said on its website.

Facebook shares fell 18 cents to close at $ 28.32 and dropped another 7 cents in after-hours trading.

Nintendo’s future called into question as Wii U sales plummet

Nintendo (NTDOY) now faces the very real prospect of having an absolute flop on its hands. As Microsoft (MSFT) moved an estimated 281,000 Xbox 360 consoles in the U.S. in January to take the top spot for the 25th consecutive month, Gamasutra reports that Nintendo sold “well under” 100,000 Wii U consoles last month. The site estimates that sales may have fallen between 45,000 and 59,000 units in January, which could mark the worst month for a Nintendo console since before the original Wii launched.

[More from BGR: Verizon’s Galaxy S IV detailed in purported benchmarks]

This is not the first sign of trouble for Nintendo’s Wii U. The new console has not been well received in the U.S., U.K. or even in Japan, and Nintendo recently lowered its first-quarter outlook as a result. With Sony (SNE) set to unveil its next-generation PlayStation 4 next week and Microsoft prepping a new Xbox console, the door is quickly closing on Nintendo’s latest effort.

[More from BGR: Samsung to reportedly take on BlackBerry with new enterprise platform]

Relief will likely not come anytime soon for Nintendo. New video game consoles take years to develop and typically remain on the market for the better part of a decade. What’s more, Nintendo has said it will not lower the Wii U’s retail price — the company is already selling the Wii U at a loss — so it remains unclear how Nintendo plans to reverse its current slump and bolster sales.

Will the Wii U be Nintendo’s last home video game console? The possibility is looking more real with each passing month.

Electronic Arts, Zynga settle competing lawsuits

(Reuters) – The video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc and social gaming company Zynga Inc have agreed to settle competing lawsuits over alleged copyright violations and the recruiting of employees.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but both companies agreed to permanently drop claims they had raised in litigation begun last August in San Francisco federal court.

Electronic Arts had alleged that Zynga’s new game “The Ville” ripped off EA’s “The Sims Social,” which had been launched the prior August and at one point become Facebook’s second most popular game ahead of Zynga’s “FarmVille.”

It said Zynga was able to clone “The Sims Social” in part with the help of executives it had hired away from Electronic Arts, and who had access to critical information on how that game was developed.

Six weeks later, Zynga countersued, accusing Electronic Arts of trying improperly to stop employees from switching companies. Zynga said this violated a 2011 agreement between the companies over employee solicitations.

In separate emailed statements on Friday, Electronic Arts spokesman John Reseburg and Zynga spokeswoman Kelly Kunz said: “EA and Zynga have resolved their respective claims and have reached a settlement of their litigation in the Northern District of California.”

Silicon Valley companies compete intensely to attract talented employees, but sometimes agree to refrain from poaching each other’s workers. In 2010, several companies agreed with U.S. antitrust authorities to stop entering such agreements.

Zynga is based in San Francisco, and Electronic Arts is about 25 miles south in Redwood City, California.

In October, Zynga said it would significantly scale back its investment in “The Ville” as part of a cost-cutting plan that included the phasing out of 13 older titles.

The company on February 5 reported a $ 6.9 million adjusted fourth-quarter profit, surprising analysts who expected a loss, but posted a net loss of $ 209.5 million for all of 2012.

In afternoon trading on the Nasdaq, shares of Electronic Arts were down 20 cents at $ 16.95, and shares of Zynga were down 6 cents at $ 3.19.

The case is Electronic Arts Inc v. Zynga Inc, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 12-04099.

Google may be paying Apple $1 billion a year to be the default search engine in iOS

Google (GOOG) could be paying Apple (AAPL) as much as $ 1 billion a year for the right to the be default search engine on iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch. Scott Devitt of Morgan Stanley praised Google in a recent note to investors, Business Insider reported. The analyst said, “the next Google is Google,” noting that the company is continuing to prove itself in an ever-changing market. He believes that Google’s search business has more room to grow in expanding markets and subsidiaries such as YouTube could generate as much as $ 20 billion by 2020.

[More from BGR: Four Android smartphones lead the iPhone 5 in customer satisfaction ratings]

Devitt estimated within the note that Google could be paying Apple up to $ 1 billion just to be the default search engine in iOS, and that figure is expected to increase over the next few years. Earlier reports claimed the two companies were involved in a revenue sharing deal, however the analyst doesn’t think this is the case because it would be too messy.

[More from BGR: Next-gen Xbox may feature advanced multitasking and require Kinect to function]

He thinks Apple would instead be far more likely to do a fee per device agreement for the benefits of upfront payments and easier accounting. The analyst believes this unlikely partnership has helped Google control an estimated 95% of the mobile search market.

As Jay Yarow of Business Insider wrote, “when you consider that Apple and Android are swallowing the mobile market, paying ~$ 1 billion a year for a monopoly on the most lucrative online business in the world is a no-brainer.”
